Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to Support Young Children & Families
Observing children is probably the most important skill that we must learn when working with young children. Through observation we can learn so much about a child. Where a child is in terms of development is discovered through these observations and also by the information brought to you by the child's parents/guardians. By documenting these observations we have the chance to assess the child and provide appropriate experiences for them at the center as well as experiences they can do at home with their families.
Another important factor that supports children, is their environment. Making sure the environment is safe is top priority for a child care center. The environment should foster children's individual and group interests as well as encourages play.
