Introduction
Hello Everyone!
My name is Jessica Holden. I am currently a preschool teacher for Head Start. I have been working in the child development/education field for the past 8 years. I absolutely love my job and I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else. I have obtained my AA in liberal studies as well as an AS in early childhood education and working to further my education with Ashford University working towards my BA in early childhood education. My short term goal is to be the Lead Center Teacher at the center where I currently work, and my long term goal is to be an instructor of child development/education. I would love to mentor individuals who are interested in this field. I’ve had many influential people in my life that have helped me along the way and I would like to return that favor to others in the same field.
I am a firm believer in keeping the lines of communication open and clear. My strengths in communicating with others are that I am direct, and don’t shy away from asking questions. It is necessarily in today's fast paced world that we be able to communicate in many different facets, such as text and email messages to online social media resources and knowing what type of communication works best with each family. Also, remembering that culture plays a role in each child's life and take that into consideration when speaking with families.
I support children's language acquisition in my professional career by teaching with purpose, setting up a successful school environment, and being aware of the diversity and culture of the families in our center. I can also support language acquisition by receiving up to date information through training and professional development.
Language acquisition happens naturally. We don't need to teach children how to speak, they learn language by the social interactions within their environment. We, as early childhood education professionals, can provide a language rich environment filled with literacy and positive language experiences to the children in our care.
One literary experience that I love is after we read a book at circle time a few times, we have the children act it out. It is so great to see the children really get into it! The last play we did was Jack and the Beanstalk and we involved the whole classroom. We added a beanstalk vine and castle walls to our playhouse, we put the costumes in the dramatic play area, and we even grew our own magic beans. I love to use books the children are interested in throughout the curriculum.
