Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale
(ITERS)
Becoming familiar with a centers environment is important. If you know about an environment that you work in then you can better provide experiences to the children in your care. There are many areas that needs to be assessed and you might not be aware what these ares are. This gives you the ability to see areas where there needs attention and those that don't. Since I work at a center that was built with the intention of making sure it was a successful environment as much as possible the score was quite high, 6.61 out of 7. Those areas that needed attention were:
- Provisions for relaxation and comfort- my suggestion was to add more to the quite area and make it more secluded from the busyness of the rest of the classroom.
- Nap- my suggestion was to rearrange the area so that solid barriers could be put between those cots what needed to be closer together than 36 inches.
- Opportunities for professional growth- my suggestion was to let staff meet together to discuss curriculum and other issues in a set meeting time. Staff does not get time to meet together outside of work. I feel that this issue should definitely be worked on because it is important for staff to discuss issues while not being distracted by the duties of work.
