Math Center
Counting Bears
Learning Goals-number sense, math operations, classifications, and measurement.
By using the counting bears with the scale the children are able to sort the bears by color and size, and weigh the differences. They can add and take away to compare the size, weight, and capacity of the bears. The children are able to use math language to communicate their findings to others like peers and staff. The children can also count the bears to see if there is a difference between the two when weighing them.
Books
Learning Goals- classification and interest in literacy
The books are there for the children to look at read. “Numbers All Around” by Susan Canizares and Betsy Chessen is a great multicultural book that partners the written number with real objects. For example the number two is next to a picture of a number two pencil. It also gives children the chance to look for numbers in their own environment.
Peg Number Boards
Learning Goals-number sense, understanding quantity and counting
When using the peg number boards the children can see the number written down, and then use their own small motor skills to put the pegs in the appropriate number of holes. The children are able to use number names and associate them with the quantity of pegs.
Rulers
Learning Goals-number sense, and measurement
Rulers at the math center can be used to measure anything! From the items already at the math center like the pegs, counting bears, or even the book. Children can see the differences in lengths and heights. A ruler is something that children will become familiar with throughout their schooling.
