"Belle" 2/9/11
"Look a bug!" "Eww" Bella walks over to a tree and wipes her finger on a tree. She walks away from the tree and starts singing to herself. She walks along the path looking around. Four boys start to follow her. She turns around and points her finger at one of the boys "Wanna go to the sandbox?" "Yeah" says the boy she pointed her finger at. She starts to sing again, this time in a lower tone of voice. "Yeah ... ball ... yeah ball" She walks over to the sandbox and picks up a bucket. She moves to another spot in the sandbox and picks up a ball. She gives the boy a bucket and the ball. "Benjamin, here look. Ball. Yeah." Boy drops bucket and picks up shovel. Bella looks at boy and says "Look, cake! Huh?" Another boy walks into the sandbox and picks up the bucket with the ball in it. "No, mine! Bella says. Teacher walks toward Bella. "Do you want Jack to take the bucket? Ask him if you can have the bucket back." Bella turns towards the boy and says "Can I have bucket Jack?" Boys says "No!" and runs out of the sandbox with the bucket. "Aww, my bucket", she says making a sad face. She looks at the teacher and says "I want my bucket!" Teacher kneels down on Bella's level and says "What about a different bucket?" "No, I want my bucket!" Teacher replies "How about we look for another bucket, Bell?" Bella looks around and says "Yeah" A woman enters the play yard. "Na Ma!" Bella runs towards the woman with her arms open wide, giving her a hug once she reaches the woman.
Conclusion:
I chose to use a narrative because I wanted to gather as much information as possible. The information that I gathered tells me that Belle is exploring her environment. She is using language to express herself and to communicate to both peers and her care givers. She is using her motor skills to move around her environment and to pick up objects. She is using social interactions to problem solve. She has formed relationships with her care givers and shows awareness of familiar adults. This information would help me to provide experiences for Belle to further develop through her daily happenings.

"Zack" 2/9/11
Zack puts a blue ball in a toy dump truck. He makes a grunting noise, and pushes the dump truck down the walk way and up a small hill. He walks over to the fence that divides the toddlers from the preschoolers where a child is standing on the other side. Zack asks the the older child "What you doin?" The other child looks at Zack and says "Nothin" and walks away from him. Zack watches him walk away. He stands there for about a minute watching the older child play. He then takes his dump truck and pushes it over to the sandbox. He stands there, not entering the sandbox. He looks at the other children playing, then runs up and down the walk way with his dump truck five times. He does this for about five minutes, then goes over to the sandbox again. He enters the sandbox and takes the blue ball out of the dump truck. He throws the ball down the hill. He watches roll and then it stops at the bottom near another child. The child near the ball picks it up and Zack yells "No!" The child looks at him and drops the ball and walks away. Another child see the ball and picks it up. Zack runs down the hill say yells again "No! My ball." The teacher walks over to Zack and the other child and says "Zack, stop please." Zack looks at the teacher. "Ask Simon for the ball or we can find another one." The other child hands the ball to Zack, he says "Thank you" and walks away.
Conclusion:
I chose to write this observation as a narrative. This observation shows how Zack is exploring his environment. He observes his environment and the people and things in it. He enjoys playing with the dump truck and using his gross motor skills to move around. He is fully engrossed in what he is doing. When another child intervenes he needs guidance to interact appropriately with his peers. I can help Zack by giving him the correct language to use when problem solving with his peers, as well as providing experiences where he can use his gross motor skills.

"Sunny" 2/11/11
Sunny is in the dress up area, and she puts a play doctors coat on. Another child says to Sunny "No! Mine!"Sunny bends down and looks at the other child with the coat in her hand. They stare at each other. The other child hits Sunny, and she hits back and says "No!" A teacher intervenes and tell the children "Kind hands, please." Sunny walks away without the doctor coat and walks to the block area where a small group of children are sitting. Sunny approaches one of the children and asks "Where your Mommy?" The child answers " I don't know?" Sunny says "My Mommy at school. She's in class, huh." She continues to talk to him most of it is hard to understand. Another child gets picked up by their Mom, Sunny says "Jay and Mommy go?" The teacher responds "Yes, Sunny. Jay and his mommy went home." She walks over to the dress up area and picks up the play doctors bag. She takes out all the items in the bag. She brings the bag over by the front door. One of the teachers says good bye to the children, she waves good bye and continues to look at the items in front of her. She sees a leaf on the floor, picks it up and twirls it between her fingers. "Uh oh, I need a tissue" she says to a teacher. The teacher says to Sunny, "Would you like me to get you a tissue?" "Yes. I have a runny nose." The teacher hands her a tissue, she wipes her nose and gets up and puts it in the trash."
Conclusion:
I chose to use a narrative as my way of recording my observation. This observation tells me that Sunny enjoys dramatic play. She interacts with her peers, and sometimes needs guidance to interact appropriately with others. She uses language to communicate with her peers about familiar events and people. She is aware of proper health routines and is able to acknowledge it when it is needed. I would use this documentation to show her parent/guardian examples of her development. It can also help me to provide experiences to help her further develop the skills she is strong in and

"Taya" 2/11/11
Taya walks over to the water fountain. She gets a paper towel from the dispenser, turns the water on and gets it wet. She walks over to a table with the wet paper towel in her hand, and starts wiping the table. Some of the children sitting near the table watch Taya wiping the table, and follow her by going and getting a paper towel and start wiping the same table with her. She wipes down the whole table and moves to another table. Taya looks at a teacher and says "I'm cleaning!" She goes back to the water and get her paper towel wet again. Taya goes the the third table and starts to wipe down the table. The teacher says "Taya, thank you for wiping the table. That's enough water for now." "Ok." Walks over to the climbing structure and starts wiping down the plexiglass on the climbing structure. "I'm cleaning up the dirty germs" she says to the teacher watching her. She then starts to wipe down the railing. A parent walks in and she watches another child run to them. She laughs and said to the teacher "Where's my Mommy?". "She will be here soon", the teacher says to Taya. She looks at a child standing on the other side of the plexiglass and kisses it. A woman walks in and Taya yells "Grandma!" "Hi, Taya" the woman says. The teacher looks at Taya and says "Go get your socks and shoes, please." "Ok." Taya goes and gets her socks and shoes from the carpet and bring them over to a chair and sits down. "Grandma, that's Lisa. Say hi." The woman says "Hi, Lisa." The woman puts her shoes on, and plays with her Grandma's hair while she waits. "Say good bye to Lisa, Grandma." "Good bye, Lisa." She gets up from the chair. The teacher says "Good bye, Taya. See you tomorrow." "Good bye." Taya waves and walks out the door.
Conclusion:
I used a narrative format because this child was transitioning to preschool and this observation was going to go with her in her DRDP. This observations tells me that Taya has seen her care givers wipe the tables down and she is mimicking them. She knows about health safety and germs. She knows personal care routines and is aware of daily schedules like pick up time. I would use this observation to show other staff members examples of her development. You could look at her DRDP and look at see if she has made any strides in certain areas.
